Quando Geoff Emerick lasciò le sessioni del White Album
esasperato dall’atmosfera pesante che si era creata tra i quattro Beatles, il suo posto fu preso dal giovanissimo cutting engineer Ken Scott, che ben presto si dimostrò un’ottima scelta data la sua famosa calma ascetica! Entrato a soli 17 anni ad agli Abbey Road Studios, aveva già fatto tutta la trafila
classica passando da addetto all’archiviazione nastri, a operatore alle macchine e poi a cutting engineer (ovvero addetto al mastering dei vinili e lacche di prova). La promozione era inaspettata, perchè Ken non era considerato granchè vista la giovane età. Cominciò usando le tecniche apprese dal suo maestro Geoff, ma ben presto sviluppò
un suo proprio personale approccio alla registrazione (predilige l’uso di microfoni a condensatore per qualsiasi tipo di registrazione…ad esempio utilizza i Neumann U67 anche sui tom!), che presto lo porta a volersi mettere in proprio: fu il primo ingegnere del suono indipendente di Londra, firmando un contratto con i Trident Studios. Ken è forse conosciuto ancor più anche per essere colui che plasmò il suono di David Bowie producendo Ziggy Sturdust, e avendo praticamente inventato il sound del Jazz Rock (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham, Stanley Cark) e quello dei Duran Duran. Produttore, ingegnere e anche manager di band famose Ken è ancora in attività se volete chiamarlo!
